Are we turning into a welfare state
“There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices – to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own.” – Rod Sterling.
Are we turning into a welfare state?
There is something happening out there that seems to go against the grain of everything that I have ever been taught.
When I grew up, I was told to work hard, be honest, open doors for others, don’t just think of yourself, if you’re going to do something then do it right, say thank you and please, respect your elders and always live within your own means. I don’t know about you, but I feel that I see less and less of that these days.
I have said it before but George Harrisons song, “I-me -mine” seems more relevant these days than when it was written but George was always a very intuitive forward thinker and I think if he was alive today, he would be saddened to see what we are becoming.
The one thing that really drives me crazy today, and really the reason that I am writing this is the people that are sitting back not working and collecting money which is quite frankly more than what seniors get every year and the federal government is saying that we’ve recovered all the jobs pre-Covid which is absolute nonsense because across the country businesses are crying out for employees and so many people seem unwilling to work or even show up for job interviews. I listened to a segment on CKNW the other day and one business owner was pleading for this to stop as his business is understaffed and the people that do respond to his ads for work, don’t even show up…guess they have better things to do? His plea was for the government to stop giving out money for nothing so businesses can fill their need for help and I totally agree with him. I understand there was a need for this at the beginning of the Pandemic but come on, this has gone far past the need and turned into something else entirely. Another song comes to mind, “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits which has a line in it that says, “Money for nothin’ and your chicks for free” but if that was written today it would probably be, “ Money for nothin’ and your CHEQUES for free.
There is a cry out there for “universal income”??? You must be kidding right? No, it’s a new way some people are starting to think. You know what I think, how about universal work. Our Universe revolves around work, or at least it used to. Now, protesting has become a job, who would have seen that coming and yes, they are being paid in many cases by people pushing their agendas, how else do so many protesters travel all over the globe protesting here and there because I can see that they sure aren’t at work.
I don’t know about you, but I am proud of how hard I work. The fact is that the reason my blogs have been a little sporadic the last couple of months is that I have just been working so much lately that I just haven’t had the time to squeeze it in, so here I am at 5am writing this. My dilemma often is to try to balance my work life with all the other things in my life that are also so important to me like my wife, friends, family, and travel ( although the pandemic looked after that one). I don’t work for the money for the most part, I work for the challenge, the pride of accomplishment and the interaction with people because that has been a huge part of my love of life. I think, when you don’t have a purpose or a reason to get up in the morning, an integral part of life is missing. I promised my wife a couple of years ago that I would try to balance the work portion of my life better which I have done to a better degree and could and should continue to do because the most important thing to me is her. Its all about balance in life isn’t it. I don’t do that the best always, but I know I don’t do the worst either and the key is that I am always working on improving it.
Here is a thought, how about we stop this nonsense of universal income and start focusing our efforts on improving seniors’ level of living, God knows they haven’t had a raise that I can remember even though they are the ones that paved the way for us all, lest we forget. While we are at is, how about looking after our veterans a bit better because I think it is shameful how we brush them aside once their duty is over. Defund the Police, how about getting more police on the streets and a judicial system that backs them up. Maybe a reduced pension for government bureaucrats and move some of that over to seniors and veterans. Why in a reasonable world would bureaucrats have a pension after 8 years or so of what I would call nonservice and seniors and veterans only get a pittance that puts them at the poverty level. Politicians of all stripe as far as I am concerned have one thing top of mind and that is getting back in for the next 4 years, so they pander to the squeaky wheel instead of making the harder choice of doing what is best for the country to get us out of the quicksand of ever accumulating debt which has now become the #1 problem. Again, reminds me of another song by Ten Years After called “I’d Love to Change the World” in which there is a line that says, “ Tax the rich, feed the poor, till there are no rich no more”. The only problem with that my friends is once you “transfer the wealth” who is going to look after the debt that we have so recklessly accumulated? Well, it sure won’t be the people that want “universal income”. Common sense just doesn’t seem to be so common to me anymore.
It would be oh so easy for me to just write something warm and fuzzy that doesn’t ruffle any feathers but at some point, people from the other side of things need to speak up. I have always spoken my mind and I can tell you one thing for sure, that will not change. Cancel Culture is also a “thing” today, a nonsense thing as far as I am concerned because in essence it is just a way for others to attack you in an effort to silence your point of view, and I guess it is working on many levels like, old films, history, cartoons, and anything else that seems to offend people but maybe, just maybe, we can look at things that happened in the past and learn from them and see that there is a better way and I feel we have come along way from some of our old primitive thoughts and prejudices. This is called evolving. You don’t get everything right or do everything right from the beginning, you learn from mistakes, but don’t erase the mistakes as it should serve as a reminder to learn from.
To me, what is happening is shameful and I long for a world where work and work ethics are revered and respected and not just a tool for governments to steal from you to spend on nonsense while preserving their own pensions and incomes and raises.
Well, I don’t know about you, but I feel much better now (😊 Hope you enjoy your weekend.
