John Lennon – Remembering His Passing & Lasting Legacy

John Lennon – Remembering His Passing & Lasting Legacy

“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” – John Lennon

As many of you know, I am a die-hard John Lennon fan and have enjoyed his music and his perspective on life.  Yesterday marked 36 years to the day since he was killed, and yet somehow his legacy and relevance continues today.  Did you know that the Beatles actually played 270 live gigs in the 18 months before actually hitting the charts?  John Lennon once estimated that he practiced every day for at least 8 hours, 7 days a week.

The Beatles played together about for approximately 1,200 live shows BEFORE they became famous in 1964.  What does 10,000 hours of improving your craft really look like?  Malcolm Gladwell, author of “Outliers” estimates that this works out to 10 years of practice for the average adult.  Interestingly enough, the Beatles actually played together for 10 years exactly before making it big!

Looking back over Myles and my combined 50+ year in real estate, I estimate that in my first 10-15 years, I probably worked (on average) 7 days a week and probably 10-14 hours each day.  If I wasn’t thinking about real estate, I was taking courses, talking to successful business people, and basically trying to take in as much knowledge about construction, home sales, mortgages, development and talking to clients as I could.  I knew what I wanted to do in life, and was prepared to sacrifice everything (including sleep) to improve my real estate knowledge and skills.

Today, I would think that I spend 70-80 hours working on or in my business each week – even after all of these years.  I spend time with my wonderful wife traveling and working on maintaining strong relationships with my family and friends, but continue to read magazines, books and attend seminars to improve my business.  I think that success is really just gradual improvement in what we do, and I am committed to learning about new and exciting ways that I can not only run my business, but have lasting personal relationships with my clients.

It is ironic in a way that my idol growing up (and still to this day), is John Lennon.  It is said that most bands will never play 1,200 live events in their entire career, let alone “practice” this much before becoming successful.  I am sure that I have done over 1,200 market evaluations, and put in well over 10,000 hours my early years in the business.  The main difference is that by the time I had done 1,200 market evaluations, I had already enjoyed sales success in my career, while John Lennon’s career was only just beginning to reap the rewards of his dedication.

So, what exactly does 10,000 hours mean?
The 10 Year Plan:
1,000 hours a year
20 hours a week
3 hours a day (everyday!)

It sounds easy, doesn’t it?  You only spend 3 hours a day every day doing something you are passionate about to attain greatness.  However, when look at the long-term picture, how many of us consider a career change in a decade?  How many of us have tried to make our marriage work for many years, only to see it end in divorce?  How many hours a week have we missed going to the gym because we were too sore, too tired, or feeling unwell?

Herein lies the challenge.  To follow your passion in life (whatever it may be), and be willing to commit to practicing your craft to improve your skills.  At the same time, it is important to be mindful of your time with family and friends and finding a balance that works for you.  Whether your passion is your career, painting, writing, working on old cars – embrace it.  In the wise words of John Lennon, “time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted”.
