Playboy Mansion FINALLY Sells… To The Neighbour!

Playboy Mansion FINALLY Sells… To The Neighbour!

“Follow your own particular dreams. We are handed a life by peers, parents and society, you can do that or follow your own dreams. Life is short, be a dreamer but be a practical person.” – Hugh Hefner

It’s official.  The Playboy mansion, owned by Hugh Hefner, has finally been sold.  At 90 years of age, Hefner had added a clause to the listing that would require any owner to allow Hefner to occupy the property for the balance of his life AND keep the famous Hefner bedroom untouched until after his death.

Originally listed for $200 million, the selling price has not yet been revealed, although the name of the buyer has.  It turns out that the next door neighbor, Daren Metropoulos, who is only 32 years old, purchased the Playboy Mansion because he wants to reconnect the 2 estates which was the original concept of the architect and original owner.  The Metropoulos family has owned Pabst Brewing Company and co-owner of the Hostess Brands (company who makes Twinkies) and an investment company.  Did you know?  The first owner of the “Playboy Mansion” was Louis D. Statham, a celebrated chess player who worked for NASA as an engineer.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the 6 acre estate property featuring a home built in 1927 with pool and the famous grotto where Hollywood elite partied, sold for a “nine digit sum”.  The grotto became even more infamous in 2011 when over 120 guests became ill after enjoying the grotto and the health inspectors discovered bacteria present in the grotto that causes Legionnaire’s Disease – a very severe type of pneumonia!

Photos from the estate’s glorious (and dubious) past do not seem to reflect the condition of the property today.  Former Playboy Bunny, Izabella St. James, wrote in her memoir that the home is filthy and is home to many dogs who have turned the palatial property into their own space to relieve themselves.  The interior has not been updated in recent years and many agents have remarked that the home requires a substantial renovation to bring it back to its original greatness.  I guess it really has…gone to the dogs.

Another interesting fact about the Playboy Mansion is that is one of the only properties in Los Angeles that comes with its own zoo license. There is no word yet if the new owner plans on trying to maintain this license to keep wildlife such as squirrel monkeys and the multitude of birds that Hefner adores.  It also holds a license to permit fireworks displays all year long, so this might be a selling feature for a neighbor to purchase the property to control when the lively fireworks are enjoyed!

As an avid John Lennon fan, I couldn’t resist including a reported story of Lennon’s shenanigans at the Playboy Mansion.  Lennon allegedly partied there in 1974 (while he was split from Yoko Ono) and put out his cigarette onto one of the paintings.  The painting turned out to be an original Matisse painting that was valued at over $10 million.  Hefner forgave the transgression because he was an avid Beatles fan.  The painting continues to be proudly displayed even today on the mansion’s wall – cigarette burn and all!

Best Regards,
